Big Chill / iTunes Promo

Nice promo idea – when my Big Chill tickets turned up they’d suck in a ‘free 3 songs from the iTunes shop’ card. Sweet. What they hadn’t done is create a page of ‘recommended’ tracks or anything like that, which might have been a nice addon.

But free things are nice :-)

Yahoo! Podcast Mystery

I’ve got no idea how this happened. But I noticed that Yahoo! Podcasts were starting to send people to Crackunit. So I traced the link back and found this page: iain tait | crackunit.com – Episode Page on Yahoo! Podcasts

It looks like I’ve set up a Podcast for this content, which I haven’t. And I’d be scared of doing so for copyright reasons. Especially when they’ve added a ‘download (it’s free!)’ link.

Big record labels take note, it wasn’t me, it was Yahoo! what done it, honest. Anyone got any clues on how this might have happened? It looks like Yahoo! are scraping (in the nicest possible way) for podcastable content and sticking it into their directory…

My Thai Dancing Worm

quality=”high” width=”320″ height=”256″ name=”movie” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer”>

When I was in Thailand I saw this little fellow dancing on his thread as I walked up a path. I tried to film it with my digital camera, the autofocus doesn’t work well and it makes a horrible noise. Can anyone think of a track I can use as a soundtrack for this clip to drown out the motor noise. Winner will be famous or something.

Also anyone got a clue what kind of creature this is?

Nike+

nike plus

Wow. Nike and Apple have unleashed Nike+

By connecting sports shoes and iPods (using a tiny plug-in receiver) they’ve come up with something pretty sci-fi. Your shoes talk to your iPod, then your iPod talks to you, tells you how fast you’re going and all that jazz. Plus some nifty playlist / workout jiggery pokery.

Is it going to get geeks running? Or are we just going to hear a lot of:

“My average speed between my desk and the printer is 3.2mph”

How hip hop changed

Modern hip hop videos don’t look like this…

Thought it was interesting as a social snapshot of the early 80s in New York. Plus there’s some great fashions and urban landscapes in there.

Gnarls Barkley – Crazy Video

Crazy Video StillCool Hunting blog the Gnarls Barkley video for UK chart smash number one hit – Crazy. It’s top. A really simple idea beautifully executed. Based around a morphing set of Rorschach ink blots it’s a worthy accompaniment to the track. I don’t know quite why I felt compelled to write about it, it just moved me. But I guess there’s a few things that I really liked:

  1. The video mirrors the beauty (and simplicity) of the track; which is nice.
  2. They’re both a modern interpretation of things from the past. They feel like they’ve been inspired by loads of things, but actually imitate nothing (that I’m aware of).
  3. They both stand out from everything around them. The track just bursts out of the radio. And if I watched MTV I’m sure that this video would really stand out alongside the ‘booty action’ of most modern hip hop videos.

Anyway, you can watch it here if you like: Gnarls Barkley – Crazy (Quicktime)

Longtail Recommendations

long tail on last fmSupersmart Ged (who I know from Yahoo!) pointed me to the longtail recommendations engine on last.fm. I’d been to the page but I’d never noticed the slider: have a play, it’s really good (you might need to be a user to access it). It’s a really good and simple way to demonstrate in real terms the notion of ‘long tail’ to someone who hasn’t ever seen it before.

And on the topic of all things with long tails, Chris Anderson‘s book about it is on pre-order at Amazon now.

Tivoli iSongBook

iSongBook

I really like this new Tivoli iSongBook, it’s an iPod speaker system plus radio (edit: I’ve just realised it’s not new at all). There’s so many iPod speaker systems out there, but none of them really do it for me. Even the lastest Apple one kind of leaves me cold. On the other hand this one borrows from the styling of the iPod, but then makes it all its own. The fact that the dock flips out from the size and can be stowed away is really cool. Plus it’s got other little touches like the fact it’s properly shielded so you can have it near a TV or computer.

I’m sure that it’ll sound really good too, Tivoli things that I’ve experienced in the past always have. I’ve got a basic radio that I’ve had for a few years and it’s got a lovely warm sound for its size.

First Download Only No.1

I know I’m a day late, but forgive me, I’ve been away.

The BBC write about how history was made on Sunday: Crazy by Gnarls Barkley went into the UK charts at number 1. Even though it’s not even available in physical shops yet.

It’s one of those tracks that’s been hammered on the radio for months and months before being released properly, so there was obviously a massive latent, constructed, demand. Cool though.

Pandora x Last FM

TechCrunch » Pandora and Last.fm Together…sort of – I couldn’t work out which one of Last.fm and Pandora I liked best for my music recommendation needs. Now someone’s sorted out my dilemma, they’ve mashed the two together. Hoorah!
