Take a massive full on techno track like Waves by Erol Alkan and Boyz Noize, something like this:
Then put it in the hands of an awesome modern pianist / composer like Chilly Gonzales, and this is what comes out: On the flipside of the record is a great interview with Chilly where he talks about the making of the track and the joy of arpeggiation. My favourite bit is where he talks about Glen Miller's "In the Mood" being the club banger of the day. If you're lucky enough to have Spotify, the interview can be heard here: Erol Alkan – Remaking Waves – By Chilly Gonzales
You should Check out Francesco Tristano “Not for piano” (with Jeff Mills grand piano covers) and his latest project Aufgang (2 grand pianos + drum kit, listen to “Channel 7”).
And happy new year !
You might like Christian Prommer’s Drumlesson, too, if you haven’t already heard it – acoustic versions of tracks like ‘Can You Feel It’ and ‘Strings of Life’.
