Google have also been using this overlaying in Google Earth too. For Euro 2008, 3D stadiums were added to Google Earth and these had Wikipedia info, Panoramio photos, links and reviews laid onto them.
As with your Maps example, I think this is a nice way of bringing everything together in one place.
You’ll be really impressed with Google Earth then. I did the tour de France on it.
